St. Michael is viewed in some traditions as the patron saint of policemen, mariners and those who are in battle. In the Orthodox Church, he is known as the Commander of the Heavenly hosts: "Commanders of God's armies and ministers of the divine glory, princes of the bodiless angels and guides of mankind, ask what is good for us, and for great mercy, supreme commanders of the Bodiless Hosts." (an Orthodox hymn to St. Michael).
