St. George (275-281 - April 23, 303) was a soldier under the Emperor Diocletian in the Roman Empire. A martyr for Christ, he is known as an intercessor for soldiers and captives. He is frequently depicted in battle with a dragon, interpreted by some traditions as the representation of evil, or of the Christian's struggle with his/her own sinfulness. "As the deliverer of captives and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm and champion of kings, victorious great martyr George, intercede for the salvation of our souls." (Orthodox hymn of St. George).
