Gold St. Benedict of Nursia Medal #8194

Item Description

This impressive medal is crafted from polished 14K yellow gold and measures approximately 3/4" in diameter.  St. Benedict is depticted with a cross in his right hand and his book of Rule in the left.  Known as the "Father of Western Monasticism", his monastic rule has been followed by Western monks since the sixth century.  See this design also in our Sterling Silver St. Benedict Medal #8195

On each side of the saint appear "Crux S Patris Benedicti" (The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict).  Engraved in the circle surrounding him: "Eivs in obitv nro prasentia mvniamvp" (May his presence protect us in the hour of death).  The back is fashioned with a budded cross: the vertical beam reads "CSSML", Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (May the holy Cross for me be a Light).  The horizontal beam reads "NDSMD", Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (Let not the dragon [Satan] be my guide).  The four encircled letters, CSPB, mean Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict).  The meaning of the letters that circle the back are: VRSNSMV, Vade retro Satana; suade mihi vana (Begone Satan. Suggest not to me thy vain things); and SMQLIVB, Sunt mala quae libas; ipse venena bibas (The drink you offer is evil; drink that poison yourself).  PAX, at the top of the back, means "Peace".
