Each year, approximately 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  Among women, it is the eighth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer death.  It causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.  Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer-related death for women in the US, but in the last 40 years the number of cases and deaths has decreased significantly, largely as a result of women having regular Pap smears (information from CDC: ovarian and cervical cancer statistics).
