This beautiful Sterling Silver Russian Orthodox Cross is also called St. Andrew's Cross because when Apostle Andrew preached in southern Russia, he used a large three-bar cross as a visual teaching aid. All three bars were parallel, and when relating the Passion he tilted the lower footrest to signify that those on the right side of Christ will rise up into heaven and those on the left will slide down into hell. Also tradition teaches that the thief crucified to the right of Christ, St. Dismas, was the one who said, "Lord, remember me in your Kingdom," to which Christ replied, "Today you will be with me in Paradise." The thief on the left, Gestas, cursed Christ and so descended into Hades. At the top of the Cross are the Slavonic letters which represent the words posted by Pontius Pilate which said "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."
