"IHS" is an abbreviation, the first three letters of the Name of Jesus, in Greek.  In some traditions it stands for Jesus Hominum Salvator, or "Jesus, Savior of Men".  A sacrament of the Western church, confirmation marks the point in which the grace of the Holy Spirit is bestowed through the laying on of hands, and in some traditions with anointing, upon one who has been baptized.
