This impressive, sterling silver, St. Benedict medal depicts the Saint with a cross in his right hand and his book of Rule in the left. Known as the "Father of Western Monasticism", he wrote the monastic rule that has been followed by Western monks since his sixth century death. Includes an 18" silver chain; longer chains available - choose from selection box above.
This medal shows, on each side of St. Benedict, the words "Crux S Patris Benedicti" (The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict). Engraved in the circle surrounding him are the words "Eivs in obitv nro prasentia mvniamvp" (May his presence protect us in the hour of death). The back is fashioned with a budded cross: the vertical beam reads "CSSML", Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux (May the holy Cross for me be a Light). The horizontal beam reads "NDSMD", Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux (Let not the dragon [Satan] be my guide). The four encircled letters at the cross angles, CSPB, mean Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti (The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict). The meaning of the letters that circle the back are: VRSNSMV, Vade retro Satana; suade mihi vana (Begone Satan. Suggest not to me thy vain things); and SMQLIVB, Sunt mala quae libas; ipse venena bibas (The drink you offer is evil; drink that poison yourself). PAX, at the top of the back, means "Peace".
