The number of the wise men, or Magi, is uncertain: some traditions say there were three, some say twelve, others give yet different numbers.  Western tradition offers the names of Melchoir, Gaspard and Balthazar.  The Magi came from the East (possibly from Persia), seeking the newborn King.
