The image of Christ the King contains various symbols. On Jesus' head rests a magnificent crown. The crown is a symbol of honor, power and eternal life. The crown is bulb-shaped crown, banded in two layers. This crown is based on the imperial crown of the late Eastern Roman Empire and is used most often in icons of Christ the King. Jesus is shown holding an orb. The orb represents the areas over which Jesus' authority is exercised. In the case of Jesus,He has authority over the entire world. Jesus’ right hand is held up in a gesture of blessing. The first two fingers form a cross signifying his sacrifice for us. The third and fourth fingers are folded into the palm representing the union of the human and divine natures in one person.
Although the imagery of Christ the King has existed for many centuries, it received special emphasis in 1925 when Pope Pius XI instituted the feast of Christ the King.
