St. Peter the Apostle ("Petros" in Greek, meaning "rock"), was one of the Twelve Apostles, and is regarded as the leader of the Apostles. Being called as a fisherman by Christ to become a fisher of men, he is known as the patron saint of fishermen. He was martyred by the Emperor Nero and crucified upside down on an inverted cross, leaving two General Epistles to the Church of Christ. He and St. Paul are honored together on June 29. "O foremost in the ranks of the Apostles, and teachers of the world, intercede to the Master of to grant safety to the world, and to our souls the Great Mercy" (hymn to Sts. Peter and Paul).
