Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects, in varying degrees, communication, social interaction, interest and behavior. Approximately 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism; it occurs in all racial, ethnic and social groups, and is four times more likely to affect boys than girls. The puzzle piece logo was created in 1963 by the National Autism Society, symbolizing the puzzling nature and complexity of the disorder, the physiological basis of which is unknown. It also brings home the difficulty of "fitting in", something most autistic people experience as a result of the disability.
